Surgeons at Global Hospitals, Chennai performs India’s First successful Single Lung Transplant surgery

Chennai, December 20th 2011: Surgeons at Global Hospitals & Healthcity, Chennai performed India’s first successful single lung transplant surgery on a 33 year old Iraqi patient. Mr. Kareem Hamed Ameen, from Baghdad, Iraq was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease with bulla and was referred to Global Hospitals for further management.

He has been suffering for more than 2 years and was evaluated in many centers. Earlier this year also, he was admitted at Global Hospitals, Chennai and went back due to non-availability of donors. It is primarily a lung disorder. However, once both the lungs are damaged, the heart is also stressed and fails. The patient was oxygen dependent. His oxygen saturation was around 80% compared to 100% in normal individuals

On Friday (16.12.11), he underwent successful single lung transplant surgery. The transplant surgery is successful and the recipient is weaned off from ventilator. The patient is doing well and will be discharged in 10 days time.

This is the first time a single lung transplant surgery is performed in India. The team of doctors who performed the procedure was headed by Dr.N.Madhu Sankar , Chief Cardiothoracic surgeon. The team incudes Dr. Govini Balasubramani – cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr.V.Kirtivasan, Dr.Raja saravanan, Dr.Ganesh, Dr.Soundararajan, Dr. Manohar anesthetists and Dr. Vijil Ragulan and Dr. Srinivas pulmonologists.
