Overview
We offer a comprehensive program in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in children aged between 0-18 years & treatment of adults with congenital heart disease.
The circulation in new born is different from that of adults. The needs of growing children vary from adults. The complexity and nature of heart conditions are hugely different from adults. Hence they ought to be cared for doctors trained in this speciality.
Paediatric cardiologist is a physician who has completed 3 years of training in Paediatrics, and then completed another 5 years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease. After this training there may or may not be a year or two in "subspecialisation", such as treatment of complicated heart rhythm abnormalities or special "interventional" procedures. They treat children with heart disease with appropriate reassurance, medications or minor medical or surgical key-hole procedures if needed
A small proportion of children might need open heart surgery to treat them. Many years ago, a child born with a major heart problem was not expected to live to adulthood. But this has changed profoundly. Surgery can now correct or markedly improve almost all congenital heart problems. A Paediatric Cardiac surgeon is a doctor trained in operating on children’s heart.
These patients should remain, as needed, under the care of a Paediatric cardiologist. Why should this be so? Because Adult cardiologists specialize in acquired heart disease, mainly coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and related problems. So, if you as an adult have a major congenital heart problem, try to find a physician group where you can be cared for by a team of Paediatric AND adult cardiologist. And if you require further surgery, by all means find a Paediatric cardiac surgeon.
