Institute of Spine surgery
Treatments & Procedures
The Global Hospitals’ Institute of Spine Surgery brings together a team of highly qualified Spine Surgeons, to treat the spine and related issues. Physicians at the Spine Institute see patients for a variety of spinal problems and conditions. Some of the common spine issues treated here are:
- Spine injuries
- Slipped discs
- Spinal canal stenosis
- Spondylosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Pediatric and adult spine deformities
- Pediatric spine diseases and spinal dysraphisms
- Spinal infections and tuberculosis
- Spinal tumors
- Spinal vascular malformations
- Transverse myelitis
- Demyelinating spinal diseases
- Vertebral body lesions
- Spasticity
- CV Junction anomalies
- Percutaneous Spinal Instrumentation
- Stemcell therapy for spinal cord given
- Backlofen pumps
The institute offers the most appropriate, comprehensive and cost-effective treatment for a wide range of spinal problems. There are two kinds of treatments available:
- Conservative Medical Treatment - Medical management with appropriate supportive therapy is provided for all the patients. Those who do not respond are identified for further evaluation and investigation.
- Surgical Treatment - A well-trained, skilled team performs the spinal surgery. Modern theaters, state of the art equipment, and intra-operative monitoring makes the spinal surgery safe. Dedicated pain relief team can make the postoperative period comfortable and early ambulation possible. The rehabilitation and support therapies can facilitate early return to work. Some of the surgical treatments are:
- Microscopic Disectomy - Operated under high-resolution microscope. The following are some of the surgeries performed at Global Hospitals.
- Kyphosis Surgery /Kyphoplasty – Kyphosis is a condition of over-curvature of the upper back. Surgical treatment can be used in severe Kyphosis cases. In patients with progressive kyphotic deformity due to vertebral collapse, a procedure called a kyphoplasty may arrest the deformity and relieve the pain. Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure, requiring only a small opening in the skin. The main goal is to return the damaged vertebra as close as possible to its original height.
- Spine Reconstruction - Spinal reconstruction surgeries may be necessary for patients who have a deformity or misalignment affecting a major portion of their spine. These treatment procedures consist of correcting the abnormal curvature, stabilizing the newly shaped spine with rods and pins, and finally fusing the vertebrae together.
- Microscopic excision of spinal cord tumor
- Pinhole Spine Surgery - The Pinhole technique includes Coblation Nucleoplasty performed on the lower back and neck to correct Disc problems, and Vertebroplasty and Khyphoplasty performed on fractured Vertebrae. Keyhole techniques on the other hand include Spinal Fusion, Complex Spinal Reconstruction, and Deformity Correction.
- Coblation Nucleoplasty - Coblation Nucleoplasty technique treats small to moderate low back disc herniations and disc degeneration. Coblation refers to the low frequency radio waves used to carve channels into the disc by causing larger molecules to disintegrate into gases. The Coblation process is used to decompress the disc under a herniation, allowing the pressure to be reduced on the herniation and on nerve roots thereby reducing pain.
- Vertebroplasty - It is a Minimally Invasive, image guided procedure that relieve pain from fractures of the spine, arising due to weakening of vertebral bones. The procedures involve the injection of bone cement into the broken vertebra, to stabilize the spine.
- Keyhole Spine Surgery - Keyhole Spinal Surgery is the colloquial Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (EMISS) and fluoroscopically controlled surgery. Such procedures include Microdiscectomy performed with a microscope through a 50 mm (2 inch) incision. Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is performed through an incision of 7.5mm or less. In addition to the size of the procedure portal one needs to consider the efficacy and appropriateness of the approach to the spine.
- Scoliosis Surgery - Surgery may be used to treat severe scoliosis. The goal of surgery is to improve a severe spinal curve. The result will not be a perfectly straight spine, but the goal is to balance the spine and to make sure the curve does not get worse. Surgery usually involves stabilizing the spine and keeping the curve from getting worse by permanently joining the vertebrae together.
Some other treatments performed at the hospital are:
- Neurosurgery: Spine: Micro neurosurgery
- Microdisectomy
- Neuroanatomy
- Foraminotomies
- Neuronal ablation
- Spinal cord stimulation for recurrent & resistant intractable pain
